a5c7b9f00b A scientifically miniaturized marine unexpectedly finds himself floating around the body of a hypochondriac, and trying to outwit saboteurs who want the device that shrank him. Attempts by his colleagues to retrieve the little man - protected inside a tiny submersible - are hampered by the would-be thieves. A hapless store clerk must foil criminals to save the life of the man who, miniaturized in a secret experiment, was accidentally injected into him. One of the funniest movies Martin Short has made. This story is comic brilliance with priceless scenes between Short, Picardo and McCarthy. Loved McCarthy's scenes! I felt I owed people for complaining about Dennis moping around in recent pictures. This is why I say that. Of all Dennis' pictures, this is his best. This is the Quaid I like to see! No one can outdo that crazy smile when it's out there -- as it was with The Right Stuff and Great Balls of Fire.

The special effects are good, too, and necessary but the bungled super-spy industrial espionage and McCarthy's dog-bonded Goldfinger caricature really make this picture the Fantastic Voyage hoot that it was! One thing I can say about Innerspace, IT'S DEFINATELY ORIGINAL. I figure it was a great idea on paper, but once it was made, in my opinion it came out a bit cheesy. It just seems to try to hard to balance it's action and comedy parts, and comes out neither funny or exhilarating. Though I gave it a 5 for the effort, and also the great effects. Kudos to the actors too for great performances. Innerspace suffers from a problem afflicting many of this summer's movies: excess. First, it's too long. Then director Joe Dante (Gremlins) piles on the gadgetry and the inside-the-body special effects, and the movie buckles. [1 July 1987, p.D1] Not really. You may be thinking of Fantastic Voyage (1966) (1966), which is about a crew in a submarine-like ship that is miniaturized and injected into the bloodstream of an important diplomat; their mission is to perform a medical procedure that is impossible through conventional means. This film was probably inspired by Fantastic Voyage but it's not a real remake.
